Chapter Eleven
ELENA
Stepping into the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas for the red-carpet event, Iâm officially mind-blown. A rush of heady exhilaration washes over me. The grand foyer unfolds like a scene from a movie. Rich, golden light reflects off the polished marble floors and I think about pinching myself.
Majestic, vibrant and fragrant floral arrangements, line my path, leading me towards the bustling crowd of glamorous individuals all vying for some media camera time. Exactly what Iâm trying to avoid. Not hard, thank goodness. Around me, the elite glide gracefully, their laughter and ease in designer gowns make me slightly envious as I resist the urge to hitch my strapless dress up over my breasts a little more.
The stylist insisted everyone is wearing them low this year, and despite double tape, boning, and a few extra stiches, Iâm worried Iâll have my very own nipple gate if I lean forward. I am awestruck by the sheer opulence as I step further into this world of luxury and prestige. Every detail whispers wealth and sophistication.
What a week! Iâve heard people say their lives completely turned around in a few days and I know what they mean now. Mine really has.
Alex asked me here to be his eyes and ears and report back on what the talk is concerning his business dealings. He told me that he feels heâs on the verge of discovering how the information got out. Heâs in full-on damage control mode, and so am I in addition to trying to glean any new leads on the data breach.
Alex is also here with both of his daughters. So now Iâm attending the most amazing night of my life, with my best friend in the world and we have to pretend weâre strangers. How surreal is that?
I also have some security friend of Marcus assigned to be with me as a fake date. At least heâs cute. Makes up for other areas he lacks in, like not mentioning who we work for. Iâm sure heâs taken by surprise by how grand it is here as well. Makes you forget thereâs a whole other world out there.
My conscience has taken an inconvenient time to rear its head. A lot is bothering me about my plan. Mostly about lying, and the fact Iâve had to admit to myself that revenge was an underlying current in all of this. Now Iâve spent the week working with him from his family space, I see he has the exact same struggles as the rest of us. Plus, heâs so expert at what he does, itâs no accident that this man has achieved any of the accolades heâs nominated to win tonight.
Maybe I should just tell Alex the truth now and let my work speak for itself. I canât help but care how he will feel if he finds out from someone else. Damn conscience. Life would be so much easier without one. But Lily is here tonight and Iâm not doing or saying anything to ruin this for her.
